This site exposes the truth behind plans by politicians, public

officials, and private corporations  to turn

Port St. Joe  Florida in to an

industrial shipping and manufacturing center for so-called

“green energy.”

The Port St. Joe area and St. Joseph Bay have ecosystems and natural resources of global significance.  Building an industrial seaport for private profit will destroy these natural resources that belong to the public – not the corporations and politicians.

The first “green” project is a polluting biomass incinerator will burn forests and invasive “bioenergy crops” to make electricity that will be sold to Progress Energy.  It will use up scarce potable water, discharge pollution to the environment, and add hundreds of daily diesel truck trips to the areas roads.

Medical professionals have testified to the City that the project will increase asthma, heart disease, COPD and other illnesses triggered by this type of air pollution.

Using the green sounding name, the “Northwest Florida Renewable Energy Center” proposed by Rentech, LLC will attempt to burn “biomass” and then turn it into “gas.” This technology has never been done at the scale proposed for Port St. Joe — 65 megawatts.  Click here for Rentech Sylva Gas Facts

Standard and Poor’s rating service has deemed the project not credit worthy.  Click here for their report. Standard & Poor’s Report  and here for Key Quotes S&P

Port St. Joe city officials have rubber stamped the project without questioning even the most blatant misinformation spouted by the developer and its representative, Glenn Farris.

This incinerator and the whole dirty energy center can be stopped!

The Rentech biomass incinerator will:

  • have 7 smokestacks spewing out toxic air pollution within a mile of schools, homes and daycares [go to Smokestacks page of this website]
  • be an eyesore that will detract from the scenic quality of Port St. Joe and drive away tourists
  • drive down home values [go to Lower Real Estate Values page of this website]
  • add 250 new vehicle trips to local roads every day [find information here: Rentech Truck Trips]
  • use up to 13 million gallons a day of  Port St. Joe’s water at a time when residents are drinking dirty water because the City isn’t managing its water supply properly [go to Water page of this website]
  • spew 607 tons of air pollution into the air every year that will contribute to more incidents of asthma, heart disease, and more.  [Go to the Health section of this website.]
  • create few permanent jobs that are not worth the trade off
  • present a risk of explosion and fires [Go to Explosion page of this website]
  • use your taxpayer and rate payer money to build and operate it  [Go to Money page of this website]

Back-room deals and corruption have been exposed in connection with the incinerator.  Hundreds of pages City files reveal a concerted effort by politicians and officials working hand-in-hand with the biomass developer, Glenn Farris.  They have attempted to suppress the opposition and mislead the public about the health impacts.
